Whether you love them or hate them, you’re bound to run into an HOA when you’re out house-hunting! So how do you decide if it’s the right fit for you?
I’m sharing the pros and cons of buying a home in a Homeowners Association.
Let’s start off with the pros!
Number One: Amenities: For families with kiddos, an HOA might be the perfect place to grow up! Most HOA’s include swimming pools, tennis courts, playgrounds, and even gyms! These are awesome features that attract a lot of families.
Number Two: Lawn Care: An awesome HOA perk is that they take care of a lot of the exterior upkeep on your home! Often times, they’ll be responsible for mowing your grass, trimming bushes, snow removal, painting, pest control and more! Lawn care amenities may vary by community so check to make sure before you decide to move in!
Number Three: Helplines:
If you’re the type of person who dreads conflict with neighbors, an HOA can advocate for you! They’ll step in if your neighbor plays loud music or has a dog that barks at all hours. Just talk to your HOA about the problem you’re facing, and they’ll take it from there
Now let’s dive into the cons:
Number One: It Can Get Pricey:
Yes, HOA’s have some awesome amenities, but you better believe they aren’t free. When you’re a homeowner in an HOA community, you’ll have monthly dues that can get pretty pricy depending on the specific area. If you’re serious about moving into an HOA, you need to make sure the mortgage AND the monthly dues fit your budget.
Number Two: Tons of Rules:
From exterior paint colors, landscaping, pets, and more, HOA’s can have some pretty strict guidelines. While you do OWN your home, the HOA still has the authority to enforce rules. If you don’t follow them, you may get slapped with a hefty fine.
If a home in an HOA catches your eye, make sure you weigh the pros and cons before making a decision. Read the fine print and talk to an agent like me to find out if it’s the best fit for you and your family!
